Quick Get-Away Guide to Barbados!

So you have a few vacation days left and you’d like to visit the Caribbean. Barbados is one of the most, if not the most fun-filled island in the Caribbean. Barbados known mainly for it’s sandy beaches, has much more to offer for a girl’s/guy’s weekend or couples looking for either a laid back vacation or one filled with excitement. Luxe offers suggestions for a quick weekend get-away from Friday to Monday.

Enjoy Oistins Fish Fry

Located on the South Coast of the island, every Friday night, this cluster of food huts cook freshly caught fish, prepared either grilled or fried. Vendors also serve other meats seasoned to perfection, along with rice, potatoes and a Bajan favourite, macaroni pie.

Embrace the local  atmosphere with its mixture of music consisting of dancehall, reggae, pop and oldies, while sipping on the popular and locally brewed Banks beers or Mount Gay Rum.

Kick back on a Catamaran

On Saturday, jump on one of the many fine catamarans that will sail you along the West Coast of Barbados. The friendly captain and his crew will take you to swim with the turtles and view sunken ships. Enjoy Bajan food and free drinks on board, take in the sun on the deck and learn about the island’s West Coast. With many types of sailing experiences available, ask Luxe to assist with which boat would suit you best.

Take in the East Coast

With the West Coast being completely picturesque and the South Coast being the activity hub of the island, the East Coast is the rugged un-spoilt haven. Showing its natural side, the East Coast faces the Atlantic ocean and such is perfect for surfers. However, for those who aren’t surf pros’, this coast still has a lot to offer; from long serene walks, picnics, off roading and watching the sun rise; be sure to take a trip to this side of the island on Sunday.

Luxe’s Guide to Crop Over Essentials

As many of you may know, Crop Over, Barbados’ annual carnival runs from June to August with the finale ending with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday in August.

There is a ton of information online which covers what bands to jump with, what events are happening and on the sweet soca music, however, no one really speaks from experience as to the essentials needed to survive the constant ‘pump’ and vibes of the season.

Luxe gives you 10 essentials for this Crop Over season:

  1. Sun Block

Ultimately important is to protect your skin! Know the correct of  SPF required for your skin type.

  1. Mosquito Repellent

If you’re like us and seem to attract mosquitoes anywhere you go, always take a small bottle of repellent to fend off these pests. We highly suggest a Barbadian based repellent from St. Lucy Botanist.

  1. Caribbean Clothing – Romper, Cover Up, Sandals, Swimwear, Hat and Shades

You’re in the Caribbean so dress like it! In Barbados we opt to wear loose free flowing clothing and lots of shorts! Rompers, shorts, tank tops and sandals are perfect go-to’s. Check out Beth & Tracie in Holetown for some great rompers, bikinis and beach cover ups and as for shades, check EyeQ and Peoples From Barbados located in Limegrove Lifestyle Centre.

  1. Insoles will save your life!

Ladies and gents, we urge you to purchase some gel insoles, for pretty much all of your events, but especially for Kadooment. You’ll be standing and jumping a lot!

  1. Wristlet Bags

Cute little handbags are a must for all of your items while partying! Look at these trendy Bajan wristlet bags from Island Bags.

  1. Vitamins and Medication

Of course pack any needed medication, but also pack Vitamin C, multi-vitamins, advil/panadol, eye drops and aloe vera gel. These items can be found in most gas stations in Barbados just in case you forget. These will keep you going if you’re feeling a bit sore or worn ;).

  1. Extra Shoes and Clothing… For the Paint

If you’re looking to partake in any Jouvert fetes such as Foreday morning (which we do recommend) don’t forget there’s lots of paint and powder…everywhere! Be sure to pack throw-away sneakers and extra clothing for this event.

  1. Portable Charger

With all of the back to back events, charging your phone can sometimes be a pain. Purchase a portable battery pack that can fit right your new wristlet bag :).

  1. Water and Food

Trust us, you’ll need all the energy possible! Fill up on plenty water and food. You’ll find food vendors all over the island selling fish cakes, fresh fish, macaroni pie and rice and peas to fill you up.

10. Clear Nail Polish

For those jumping or playing ‘mas’ on Kadooment day, clear nail polish can be a life saver for those runs in stockings.
